Blog Post #3: "The 4 Gospel Writers"
The 4 Gospel Writers
I chose this picture because it shows the 4 Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. |
I chose this picture shows because it shows the symbols of each Gospel writer. |
What are specific things that you learned about the Gospel Writers from the group presentations?
All of this information was very new to me. I had never known that there were even 4 apostles. But the things that I found most interesting was that they each were originally written in greek. I also learned that not all of them met Jesus. Some just studied Him. They also all had a symbol. Matthew's is a winged man, Mark's is a winged lion, Luke's is a winged ox or bull, and John's is an eagle.
Based on the class discussion, what were similarities you saw within the 4 Gospel readings?
As I said earlier, they were all written in greek. Also, their symbol had common quality in their symbol. They all had wings. A winged man, a winged lion, a winged ox(or bull) and an eagle. I believe that having wings made you purer like an angel. Also, all of their purposes had to do with Jesus in a different way; but still all decided that their purpose was to include Jesus.
Based on the class discussion, what were differences you saw within the 4 Gospel readings?
They were all written for a different audience. Matthew's was for the Jewish people, Mark's was for the Gentiles and Christians in their time of prosecutions, Luke's was for the Greek people, and John's was for his disciples in Asia Minor. And even though their purpose all had to do with Jesus, they were all doing something different. Matthew was spreading the word of Jesus, Mark was displaying the good news of Jesus in a lively manner, Luke was encouraging the rich to care for the poor and told stories of Jesus's life and his infancy, and John was confirming and securing Christians in the faith. They were each spreading "Jesus" in a different way. Their own way.
From the information you gathered from the presentations and class discussions, which Gospel would you prefer to read and why? (Think about time period, first or second-hand account, purpose, etc.)
I would prefer to read the Gospel of Mark. The main reason why I would like to read that is because it was written in the persecution and destruciton of Jerusalem. I think that reading that would increase my knowledge of Jerusalem and Christians altogether. I also really like how the purpose is to display the good news of Jesus in a lively manner. That means that e isn't forcing information down people's thoughts, he is calmly telling people. Also, I don't know why but a winged lion really intrigues me.
