Blog Post #6: "The Beatitudes"
Blog Post #6: The Beatitudes
I chose this picture because it shows how the Beatitudes were told and how people first became aware of the Beatitudes. |
What were new things that you learned about the Beatitudes?
One new thing that I learned about the Beatitudes is that they all have something in common. They bless someone that has a bad or good trait. In the second Beatitude, it states "Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted." This Beatitude shows that those who are mourning or hurt, that they can find comfort in their pain-filled life. Another thing that I learned about the Beatitudes is that they (like the bible) can be interpreted depending on each person who reads them. While reading the second Beatitude (as stated above), one may interpret it as a person who is hurt being forgiven by themselves. Another might interpret it as a person who is hurting another and being forgiven by the one that they hurt.
Which Beatitude resonated with you the most and why?
The Beatitude that resonated with me the most is the fourth: "Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall inherit the earth." This resonated the most with me because I just feel like it sums up our society today. Those who seek the need to be right and on top, with hard work, will eventually get what they earn. But I also resonated with the second one: "Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted." I also resonated with this Beatitude because I believe that it is necessary for someone who is mourning to be able to find comfort. Find comfort in God, their friends, or their family.
What were some things that you realized during the class discussion ("gallery walk")?
I learned that all of the Beatitudes can be interpreted differently. Because the Bible was written many years ago and for a different audience, each person interprets the Bible in whatever way they feel right. For example, Angela Marie's interpretation had to do with turtles. Nobody had thought of that possibility. A person's interpretation comes from their imagination and past experiences. Angela Marie might have had a pet turtle before or might just love the species. She interpreted it in her own way that makes her remember the Beatitude.
How can you display the Beatitudes more in your life?
I can display the Beatitudes more in my life by having more and more people becoming aware of the Beatitudes. Before this year, I had no recollection or knowledge of the Beatitudes because I am not Catholic. So by spreading the knowledge of the Beatitudes to people that have no idea what they are, people can have a better understanding of the Catholic faith. I could do this by posting posters or going around and telling people about it. But what I would most likely do was to create a booth and just "preach" the knowledge of the Beatitudes. Of course, being respectful and kind while spreading the knowledge of the Beatitudes.
