Blog Post #7: Discipleship
What did you learn about the original disciples form the group projects?
I learned many interesting facts about the original disciples. One being, that Peter, James the Greater, John, and Andrew were all fisherman. I also learned that Peter and Andrew were brothers and each was a fisher, Peter being the Fisher of Men in Masses and Andrew being the Fisher of Individuals. One thing that I also learned was that many of the Disciples were first followers of John the Baptist, including Peter, John, Phillip, and Andrew. I also learned that before he became a disciple, Matthias was a minister in Judea, which I found interesting.
Which disciple did you find most interesting and why?
I found Peter, which was my disciple most interesting. One reason why I think this is because before he was a disciple and a follower of John the Baptist, he was a sinner. Jesus forgave him for being a sinner and he became one of Jesus' disciples. I also found it interesting that he was with Jesus when Jesus was being arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane. He even ended up pulling out his sword and swinging it at one of the guards head, sure he ended up only cutting off his ears but he tried to defend Jesus and that is what matters. I also found it interesting that he was buried in his basilica, St. Peter's Basilica located in Vatican City, Rome. It was started by Pope Julius ll in 1506 and completed by Paul V in 1615. His Basilica was also home to his fellow disciple, Jude.
Based on what you learned, what are the characteristics of the people who follow Christ?
One of the characteristics that are a mandatory characteristic of being a follower of Christ is dedication. You have to be dedicated to Jesus, your faith, and yourself. If you are not dedicated to any of these things then you are not fit to be a follower of Christ. You also have to be brave by being able to die in the name of Christ. Being a follower of Christ comes with a lot of people that might not agree with what you are saying. Just like many of the disciples, you have to be ready to die for what you stand for.
Do you feel that you display any of these characteristics? Why or why not?
I feel like I do have dedication in my life, but not willing to die for what I believe in. In my life, I am dedicated to my friends, family, and school work. Sometimes some people might not be as dedicated to the same things that I am dedicated to but it is my life so I can decide what to do with it. Being only 15, I feel like I have not established what mark I want to leave on this earth. I don't even know what job I want to do yet. But I know when I get older, that I will be able to die for what I think is making this world a better place.

I chose this picture of St. Peter's Basilica because it shows how meaningful one man's life on this earth can be, that they built a Basilica after him that took over 100 years. |
