Blog Post #8: "Suffering"
Blog Post #8: Suffering
I chose this picture because it shows just one of the many ways that the apostles suffered physically. |
In what ways did the people you learned about during this unit suffer? What was their reaction to suffering?
The apostles experienced many types of suffering, most of which suffered for their beliefs. For example, when Paul preaches at Rome underground, he is thrown into prison because of his preaching. He was later granted release because the Romans could not find any evidence against him. However, he is later put under house arrest for another two years, he continued to preach the word of God in the house with people visiting to hear him. Even though he was suffering, he continued to preach what he believed in. He continued to do his duty to God and change the world.
Which story from the Acts of the Apostles did you find most inspiration and why?
I found the story if the Storm found in Acts 27: 13-26. The storm is a story where Paul was held prisoner with other apostles. All of them board a boat just as a storm is about to hit. They are then visited by the Angel Gabriel who says that they will survive but the only thing that will be destroyed is the boat. After they get Italy, the place where they were sailing to, they are amazed that what the Angel said was true. I found this inspirational because it makes me feel that in my time of need, I may be visited by an angel.
How have you experienced challenges in your own life and how have you dealt with them?
One recent challenge that I have had to face in my life is having my Grandmother pass away. This challenged me because not only was I close to her, it also impacted my family. I believe that it was harder and easier to have my family around me. It was hard because, when I was with them, there was an absence where my Grandmother was supposed to be. But it was also easier because they all knew what I was going through and we could help each other through the tough time. This second challenge seems like nothing compared to the first but becoming one of the Junior varsity soccer captains. As captain, we were organizing team bonding events, catfight t-shirts, etc. I overcame this challenge because I had the support of the other captains with me. In order for me to overcome challenges, I need a stable support system that understand what I am going through.
Who are people that you can turn to in times of need and why?
The main person that I can turn to in my times of need is my mother. I've known her my whole life and she is considered to be a "cool mom" that organizes carpool and was my girl scout troop leader for five years. I can also turn to my friends. Georiga has been my best friend since first grade and has literally been there for me through thick and thin and the drama of eighth grade and freshman year. I also have my neighbors who have also been my best friends since fourth grade, we had the kind of friendship that we could meet up after a long time and everything would be just like we left it. In addition, I have my new friends at Notre Dame. Last year, I was not as close to them as I am now. But now I can talk to them about everything.
